This is the third Raider Battalion newsletter for SY 04/05. The battalion OPTEMPO & morale is high and the cadets continue to train hard in preparation for commissioning or summer training. We are proud of your performance. This edition of the newsletter covers many exciting events that are conducted during the spring quarter & planned for the summer. Thanks to those who contributed to this edition. Go Raiders!!

From the Battalion Commander
WOW!!! What a year. The end of the Spring Quarter may be just around the

corner, but that doesn’t mean our cadets are gearing up for a vacation. Many of our students will be taking this time away from classes for a more “hands-on” approach to learning the Arts and Sciences of military techniques. This year we will have 12 juniors heading out to Fort Lewis, WA from June to August to participate in the Army ROTC’s Leadership Development and Assessment Course. Also, we will be sending one cadet to the Leaders Training Course at Fort Knox, KY. Furthermore, we are sending thirteen juniors and sophomores to additional training this summer at the following locations: three cadets are going to Airborne school in Fort Benning, GA , one cadet will be going to Air Assault School at Fort Campbell, KY, one cadet to the Mountain Warfare School in Jericho, VT, two cadets have the opportunity to participate in Robin Sage and conduct training exercises with Special Forces units at Fort Bragg, NC, two cadets are going to Walter Reed Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center to participate in the Nurse Summer Training Program, and four cadets are going to Cadet Troop Leadership Training to shadow a platoon leader at Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Campbell, KY, Fort Irwin, CA, and Fort Hood, TX.

Finally, this year we will have the largest Army ROTC commissioning class on record for the Raider Battalion. WSU Army ROTC will commission a total of 14 cadets as Second Lieutenants by the end of August 2005. Congratulations to all our soon to be LTs and all cadets on your achievement thus far, have safe travels this summer and return safe in the fall for another action packed year.

LTC Hughes, WSU Raider Battalion Commander

Cadet Battalion Commander
It’s hard to believe, but spring quarter is almost to an end and summer is quickly approaching. What a great year we’ve had! The success of the Raider Battalion could not have been achieved without the hard work and dedication of each and every cadet. Thank you all for such a wonderful experience, I feel proud and honored to have been your cadet battalion commander.

I wish the best of luck to all of you. Keep up your motivation; before you know it, you’ll be pinning on those gold bars. RAIDERS LEAD THE WAY!

Cadet Profile: Who am I?
I am currently a Wright State University sophomore and MS II cadet. I love helping others so that could be why I chose my major field of study. I grew up and was raised in the local Dayton area, but I currently live on campus. I was new to Army ROTC at the beginning of the school year, so you may not have known me, but hopefully you know me now. Do you know who I am?

George C. Marshall Award Winner: Bailey
I was honored with the opportunity to attend the annual George C. Marshall Award Seminar. The George C. Marshall Foundation awards the top cadet from every Army ROTC program in the country and cadets from all of the service academies with an invitation to the conference. It is held annually on the campuses of Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia and lasted from 12 April thru 15 April 05. There were many very important guests that spoke to the cadets including: Secretary of the U.S. Army, The Honorable Francis J. Harvey; Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, General Peter J. Schoomaker; U.S. Army Accessions Command Commander LTG Robert L. Van Antwerp, Commanding General 82nd Airborne Division, Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV; Major General David Hicks, Chief of Chaplains for the Army; Major General Alan Wayne Thrasher, Commanding General, US Army Cadet Command; and Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth O. Preston.

ROA Conference
Cadet Dennison recently attended the Reserve Officer Association (ROA) Conference in Washington D.C. He says it was a great opportunity to see the sights (visit the historic capital) and meet some very experienced officers from all branches of the military. It was also a great vacation from the rigors of ROTC. Way to go XO!

Congratulations LTC (Ret) Arneson
Congratulations to our own LTC (Ret) Charles W. Arneson on being selected as the “Cadet Command Recruiting and Operations Officer (ROO) of the Year” for 2005. This is the second year in a row that LTC Arneson has been awarded this honor for his dedication to all aspects of recruiting and marketing of the Wright State University Army ROTC program. Many of the current Cadet Command and Brigade ROO programs and tracking methods were devised by LTC Arneson and implemented throughout our higher headquarters. In addition, most of our current cadets were welcomed to the program first by LTC Arneson. LTC Arneson’s constant will to succeed and improve all aspects of this program were directly responsible for his receiving this award. We look forward to next year as he will try for the “Threepeat”. –

Raider’s Support May Daze
The Raider Battalion hosted the US Army Adventure Van, a state-of-the-art mobile marketing interactive asset that visited the campus for MAY DAZE on 6 May. The “Event” afforded WSU students and our cadets the opportunity to participate in interactive activities that showcased advanced technology, challenged the body and mind, and highlighted the diverse officer career fields available in the US Army. Nearly 200 students and cadets experienced the M1A2 crew stimulator, the Apache crew simulator, the 9MM pistol stimulator, the robotic arm, and informational kiosks describing Today’s Army. The Ranger Company sold massive amounts of animal flesh (hamburgers and hot dogs) to raise money for the club while helping raise funds for the Eric Payton Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Raider Battalion conducted another highly successful venue to improve the program’s visibility and image on campus. The weather was great and the cadet support was outstanding. Good show Raider Battalion. The cadre and staff are proud of you. Keep charging hard!!
